Advocacy in Action: Protecting Students from ICE in Schools
A powerful example of the Democratic Headquarters Bloomingdale Florida’s commitment to action is our advocacy around ICE presence in schools. When the Trump Administration authorized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to apprehend children on school grounds, concern and fear rippled through our community.
While the Hillsborough County School Board said they had items in place to protect students, the East Hillsborough Democratic Club knew more needed to be done. Our President, Drew Vaughn, attended school board meetings to push for stronger protections and urging the district to adopt clear policies that would: Require ICE agents to present official identification and warrants before entering schools. Limit ICE access to specific, trained school officials. Mandate parental notification before students are approached. Ensure student interviews involve a guardian or legal representative. Preserve instructional time by restricting enforcement actions to non-class hours.
Working closely with the Florida PTA, the Club helped champion these recommendations and returned repeatedly to the school board to advocate for policies that truly protect our children from invasive and frightening enforcement actions.
Though this fight is ongoing, it exemplifies the EHDC’s dedication to standing up for vulnerable community members, not just with words, but with persistent, strategic action.
